Old Town Vintage

I had attended Smithfield Olden Days Festival in Smithfield Virginia and was impressed with the old town architecture. I had come across this store and really like the logo / type design.  It’s simple, the emphasis is clearly on the letter “L” – but how it encloses the names and clearly separates the names from the what I will call a tag line ” antiques . exquisite junk” . Which helps ground the over all design.  Besides the clean and vintage use of lettering the feel / tone of the design is carried into the concept and use of the word” exquisite” to describe junk. There are so many words that can used to describe junk but ” exquisite”  seems to be the right fit for this design.

Black and White in the Home PART II?

I had done a post earlier about the set design for  Once Upon A time – Black and White in the Home ?  I really like the mix of hi-end with the nature feeling. I was able to find the wall paper used on set and plan to buy some for my place.  The wall paper can be found  at www.eadeswallpaper.com and if you search for birch tree wallpaper you can see the other style options for the wall paper.

Privet House Company

Privet House Company

I noticed this display in Target and it not just classy, sheik, and modern. It really has a home, antique feel. It’s so simple the there is focus on the images / items that can be bought through this house ware line. The old chalkboard drawing feel with the simple illustrations really help present a laid back at home feel. The line drawings with the minimal details help present the form and special relation of the object but table that everything is on is implied by the perspective. I do like the type design with the serif font / display font (Privet) and sans serif (House), it helps contrast the text and not make the label too text heavy.

L Wine

Was looking at wines at the store and this bottle stood out from the shelf. I haven’t had much of the Cabernet Sauvignon, but always willing to try everything once. I really like the look of this wine. There is black and white but the tan helps present a more earth tone and not an old, aged look. Withe the line up of the bottles on the self having the dark bottle with a focal point really makes it unique. Some labels are highly decorative and or  intensified with graphics. With the simply and  classy feeling for the label keeps it clean – I think with the use of a serif font helps keep it grounded and strong.  I would have liked to see the L label be a di-cut, but I know that would not be cost-effective .

Simple & Iconic

I am a big 007 fan and looking forward  to see  the new James Bond Film. I know the trend for movies is more graphics, action and all – but with the James Bond movies it’s all about the mission and it really doesn’t need all the fluff. I hope this movie stays with its ionic and historical back ground… But anyways this movie poster is so simple and iconic that we know it is James Bond without having the look at the 007 under the title or the James Bond of the Film – The gun barrel is the iconic image for Bond and he is always at the other end. It has been updated with James in the barrel and not just on the other end. There is great depth and contrast is this photo that is not flat or boring. This show how consistent use or brand identity works with a simple image, color or style.

Here is a video of the iconic james bond intro and how this movie poster plays off of it.

I saw this photo online and its amazing how photographers are able to capture amazing images. This picture  is of glacier is so amazing – it keeps my eye moving, the angle of the shot and light in the picture and how it reflects off of glacier creates the focal point. I seems to be cold, daek but full of life.

PSA – Stop Bullying

Clearly bullying has always been a problem, but it is getting out of hand. Since the effects of bullying are resulting in death, I hope the school systems take this a little more serious.

Public

Went to The Public House and saw this sign in the restaurant. The food is amazing and I hope to got there again!!! AS for the sign I really like the type treatment for this. I am not sure if it is one type face at different weights or two fonts used. I am not sure but it is not over whelming or disconnected. It is a list of streets and the treatments go together but each street is differentiated from each other, it doesn’t read all as one statement. This is a good example of how less is more…

Strong Concept is a PLUS

On the second season on Face off – Rayce Bird won!! It was as close one since the top three contests were amazing and so different – I wasn;t sure what each one would bring to the table. For the final challenge the contestants had to create  three looks, in 4 days and the models would be performing in the costumes for the final act. Rayce had chosen the theme of Sci – Fr and is concept played off dualities – light and dark. His execution was amazing. Each character stood out as an individual but place together it brought his vision and idea to a full completion. The middle character is my favorite. Thye model has two faces and the idea of being a split mind-set or divided into two was amazing.

Consistency is important.

I heard Katy Perry’s New song ”  Part of Me” and I really like it and I came across this youtube. I really like the Type Design for this and the consistent treatment for the letters do present an urban grunge feel. I really like the hard use of edges, I guess the jagged edges on the vertical lines on the letter forms really incorporate the song title and the lyrics. It is so simple and straight forward but the change in color and use of effects to literally convey the iconic version  of the lyrical sense. (Hope that makes sense.) Examples would be the glowing, the fading and drain and so on and so on…..This really keeps your eyes moving and it is not overly done to the sense where you have to struggle to read the lyrics.

For the type treament it seems theres was a play on addition and subration to the anatomy of the letters. The counters of the letters were remove and jagged line to the main vertical line of the letters were added. I thin when designing type faces the over all apperance of the letters seperate and together are some of the main challenges for type design. In this case you have to remove one thing to add another.
